On Face Masks

I HATE wearing that fucking thing. I moved to the west coast to get away from hot muggy air. I want cool fresh air. I only wear a mask when forced.

  1. I have an immune system. George Carlin went over this perfectly twenty years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnmMNdiCz_s&t=18s
  2. If I die, I die. That is coming no matter what. You wanna live forever? Ain’t gonna happen. Also, my life sucks, and I am ready to end it.
  3. As far as everyone else, it’s way too late. As a species, we are going extinct very soon. Forty years ago, the owners (those in charge) had a decision to make. The decision was between “maintaining human habitat” or “unfettered capitalism”. They decided that “keeping it in the black” completely overrode all concerns for the future of the human race. Well, the future is here. Wearing a mask is like standing in front of a full speed freight train holding up a little stop sign, like Wile E. Coyote.
The train is coming.

To Anybody who Disputes Evolution

To anybody who considers himself “not an evolutionist”:

Your problem does not lie in accepting the science of evolution. The theory of evolution is every bit as solidly proven as the theory of gravity; it just takes a bit more education to understand. Sure, there are parts of it we don’t understand – that also goes for gravity.

You are outright delusional — unable to perceive reality; in other words, bat-shit crazy. You are living in a fantasy world. You cannot deal with the reality of being an ephemeral life form:

  1. The universe functioned just fine without you for a long time;
  2. You were born, just like any other complex biological entity. You popped out of a female, just like any other mammal, naked, wet, and screaming;
  3. You are not a spiritual being temporarily inhabiting a shell of flesh – this is it, deal with it. Conscious awareness is completely dependent on a functional living brain. You are a body of flesh and blood; eating, drinking, breathing, pissing, and shitting.
  4. You will die, and be gone, just like any complex biological entity;
  5. The universe will continue to go on without you. You are not that important – get over yourself.

What is a Leftist

A ‘Leftist’ (or liberal, or socialist, or whatever you want to call it) has some typical characteristics:

A ‘leftist’ means anybody who has any compassion for poor people.

A ‘leftist’ is someone who doesn’t want to see rich people get away with murder, literally.

A ‘leftist’ is someone who would like to see a legal system based on something other than ‘money talks’.

A ‘leftist’ is someone who doesn’t want to live in a world where 99.9% the wealth is in the hands of the top 0.1%.

A ‘leftist’ is someone who can look at the world presented in Hunger Games, and recognize that that would not be a utopia.

A ‘leftist’ is someone who doesn’t want to see his friends die from easily treatable illnesses because they weren’t rich.

A ‘leftist’ is someone who generally isn’t a psychopath, while all conservatives are psychopathic.

A ‘leftist’ is someone who isn’t a fan of child labor, dangerous working conditions, and seventy-hour work weeks.

A ‘leftist’ is someone who would prefer to live in a world where his value as a human being is not based on his bank account.

To Evangelicals

Hardly anybody is ‘against the Christian God”. You can’t be against something that shows no signs of existing.

A lot of us are against CHRISTIANS, or at least the evangelical ones.

Look,

I grew up Catholic: I KNOW THE STORY

At fifteen, I read the entire Bible, cover to cover. My IQ is about 145, so I was reading at a full college level at that time. It’s mostly bat-shit crazy, self-contradictory, and boring as fuck. I KNOW THE STORY.

I have had Christians come at me with their conversion attempts hundreds of times (possibly thousands, by now). I KNOW THE STORY.

You want me to believe that all that stuff literally happened? I doubt that I would physically survive the amount of LSD I would have to take.

If NOTHING else, cadavers that have been dead for 36+ hours do not come back to life. That part alone is sufficient to convince anyone that it is mythological, unless they are insane.

Moreover, we don’t even really know what it is you are trying to convince us of. This is one of my favorite quotes:

“Atheism is without God. It does not assert no God. The atheist does not say that there is no God, but he says ‘I know not what you mean by God. I am without the idea of God’. The word God to me is a sound conveying no clear or distinct affirmation. I do not deny God, because I cannot deny that of which I have no conception, and the conception of which by its affirmer is so imperfect that he is unable to define it for me.”

– Charles Bradlaugh

Let’s say I tell you that you should believe in zgwortz.

“But what is zgwortz?”

“I feel zgwortz in my heart. You should believe in zgwortz, too.”

That’s how you sound to us.

Why I Hate All Republicans

This is the richest country in the world. It has a military budget that is almost as much as the rest of the world combined.

The Republican opinion is that we can’t have socialized medicine like every civilized country because it’s too expensive.

You ‘creatures’ (I do not consider Republicans to be human) oppose cutting that enormous military budget by just a few percent, so we can take care of the vulnerable members of our country.

I had a very close friend who died at fifty for that very reason.

You are utterly vile, and I hate you all.

Responding to Creationists

Ever notice that creationists NEVER get emotional about dogs being related to wolves? Or how you need a new flu shot every year because of the evolution of germs?

Creationists are immune to evidence. They are using pure emotion, combined with an incredible level of arrogance.  All modern science CLEARLY shows:

  1. The universe got along just fine without you.
  2. You were born, like any other biological entity.
  3. You will die, like every other biological entity.
  4. The universe will continue to get along just fine without you.
  5. The portion of the universe that qualifies as ‘human habitat’ is incredibly minuscule.
  6. You are not separate from nature.
  7. You are not a special spiritual being, with some sort of ‘dominion’ over nature.
  8. You are not that important. Get over yourself.

In the year 1850, you did not exist. In the year 2150, you will not exist. That is the way it REALLY is. Grow up, and deal with it.

Creationism is related to ‘dominionism’, which is even more stupid. Let me get this straight: approximately 30% of the surface of the Earth qualifies as ‘human habitat’, and the Earth is a tiny speck in the vastness of the universe, but you have ‘dominion’ over it? Wow. That is STUNNINGLY stupid.

The last time I interacted with a creationist, he was clearly expecting me to argue, and try to convince him to become an ‘evolutionist’ (that word cracks me up). I just said, “it is not my job to teach you elementary science. Go find a fifth grade science class — a real one, and audit it. Also, I will try to speak more slowly to you from now on.”

What evidence is there to believe in hell?

I answered this on Quora:

Absolutely none.

The threat of hell is a reification of standard human legal systems. There are laws, and people who violate these laws are taken by force to prisons, where they are to suffer.

The notion of hell is the same thing, with an imaginary cop, and based on PURE BLUFF. In poker, we call that a ‘naked bluff’; when you have a really poor hand, but you make a big bet anyway.

Some of us have called that bluff, and they have showed a pair of fours, at best.

I can understand why rulers, and those who have truly been absorbed into social norms want everyone to buy into this, and fold. The fact is, getting away with a lot of criminal activity is easy, if you have any brains about it.

I’ve heard variations of, “but, if you don’t believe in hell, and you can avoid detection by human authorities, you could kill me without being worried about being punished!”

That’s right. Don’t piss me off.

On the afterlife

Question on quora:  “Do you believe that everyone goes to heaven?”

HAHAHAHA. The notion of heaven is complete bullshit. The notion of ANY kind of ‘afterlife’ is complete bullshit. The brain is a moist computer, even if often badly programmed. Mind and consciousness are just software running on said computer.

If you are running Windows on a computer, and then melt the computer into slag, where does the Windows program go? Is it still floating around in space somewhere?

The universe got along just fine without you for a LONG time; it’ll muddle along without you after you are gone.

Get over it.

What is a Liberal?

Found this on Facebook. I didn’t write it, so it doesn’t match my values EXACTLY. However, it’s close enough to go on my website. My own comments appear in italics. Note that I am a  liberal, NOT a Democrat. The Democratic Party is far right. I identify as Democratic Socialist, bordering on Communist.

*********************************************************************************

I’m a liberal, but that doesn’t mean what a lot of you apparently think it does. Let’s break it down, shall we? Because quite frankly, I’m getting a little tired of being told what I believe and what I stand for. Spoiler alert: Not every liberal is the same, though the majority of liberals I know think along roughly these same lines:

1. I believe a country should take care of its weakest members. A country cannot call itself civilized when its children, disabled, sick, and elderly are neglected. Period.

2. I believe healthcare is a right, not a privilege. Somehow that’s interpreted as “I believe Obamacare is the end-all, be-all.” This is not the case. I’m fully aware that the ACA has problems, that a national healthcare system would require everyone to chip in, and that it’s impossible to create one that is devoid of flaws, but I have yet to hear an argument against it that makes “let people die because they can’t afford healthcare” a better alternative. I believe healthcare should be far cheaper than it is, and that everyone should have access to it. And no, I’m not opposed to paying higher taxes in the name of making that happen.

3. I believe education should be affordable. It doesn’t necessarily have to be free (though it works in other countries so I’m mystified as to why it can’t work in the US), but at the end of the day, there is no excuse for students graduating college saddled with five- or six-figure debt.

4. I don’t believe your money should be taken from you and given to people who don’t want to work. I have literally never encountered anyone who believes this. Ever. I just have a massive moral problem with a society where a handful of people can possess the majority of the wealth while there are people literally starving to death, freezing to death, or dying because they can’t afford to go to the doctor. Fair wages, lower housing costs, universal healthcare, affordable education, and the wealthy actually paying their share would go a long way toward alleviating this. Somehow believing that makes me a communist.

5. I don’t throw around “I’m willing to pay higher taxes” lightly. If I’m suggesting something that involves paying more, well, it’s because I’m fine with paying my share as long as it’s actually going to something besides lining corporate pockets or bombing other countries while Americans die without healthcare.

6. I believe companies should be required to pay their employees a decent, livable wage. Somehow this is always interpreted as me wanting burger flippers to be able to afford a penthouse apartment and a Mercedes. What it actually means is that no one should have to work three full-time jobs just to keep their head above water. Restaurant servers should not have to rely on tips, multi-billion-dollar companies should not have employees on food stamps, workers shouldn’t have to work themselves into the ground just to barely make ends meet, and minimum wage should be enough for someone to work 40 hours and live

7. I am not anti-Christian. I have no desire to stop Christians from being Christians, to close churches, to ban the Bible, to forbid prayer in school, etc. (BTW, prayer in school is NOT illegal; *compulsory* prayer in school is – and should be – illegal). All I ask is that Christians recognize *my* right to live according to *my* beliefs (I am Christian, but if you love, I just want to say howdy, not tell you what to believe.) When I get pissed off that a politician is trying to legislate Scripture into law, I’m not “offended by Christianity” — I’m offended that you’re trying to force me to live by your interpretation of religion’s rules. You know how you get really upset at the thought of Muslims imposing Sharia law on you? That’s how I feel about Christians trying to impose biblical law on me. Be a Christian. Do your thing. Just don’t force it on me or mine.

8. I don’t believe LGBT people should have more rights than you. I just believe they should have the *same* rights as you.

9. I don’t believe illegal immigrants should come to America and have the world at their feet, especially since THIS ISN’T WHAT THEY DO (spoiler: undocumented immigrants are ineligible for all those programs they’re supposed to be abusing, and if they’re “stealing” your job it’s because your employer is hiring illegally). I believe there are far more humane ways to handle undocumented immigration than our current practices (i.e., detaining children, splitting up families, ending DACA, etc).

10. I don’t believe the government should regulate everything, but since greed is such a driving force in our country, we NEED regulations to prevent cut corners, environmental destruction, tainted food/water, unsafe materials in consumable goods or medical equipment, etc. It’s not that I want the government’s hands in everything — I just don’t trust people trying to make money to ensure that their products/practices/etc. are actually SAFE. Is the government devoid of shadiness? Of course not. But with those regulations in place, consumers have recourse if they’re harmed and companies are liable for medical bills, environmental cleanup, etc. Just kind of seems like common sense when the alternative to government regulation is letting companies bring their bottom line into the equation.

11. I believe our current administration is fascist. Not because I dislike them or because I can’t get over an election, but because I’ve spent too many years reading and learning about the Third Reich to miss the similarities. Not because any administration I dislike must be Nazis, but because things are actually mirroring authoritarian and fascist regimes of the past.

12. I believe the systemic racism and misogyny in our society is much worse than many people think, and desperately needs to be addressed. Which means those with privilege — white, straight, male, economic, etc. — need to start listening, even if you don’t like what you’re hearing, so we can start dismantling everything that’s causing people to be marginalized.

13. I am not interested in coming after your blessed guns, nor is anyone serving in government. What I am interested in is the enforcement of present laws and enacting new, common sense gun regulations. Got another opinion? Put it on your page, not mine.

14. I believe in so-called political correctness. I prefer to think it’s social politeness. If I call you Chuck and you say you prefer to be called Charles I’ll call you Charles. It’s the polite thing to do. Not because everyone is a delicate snowflake, but because as Maya Angelou put it, when we know better, we do better. When someone tells you that a term or phrase is more accurate/less hurtful than the one you’re using, you now know better. So why not do better? How does it hurt you to NOT hurt another person? [Political Correctness has gone too far. It’s time to get that pendulum back to the middle.]

15. I believe in funding sustainable energy, including offering education to people currently working in coal or oil so they can change jobs. There are too many sustainable options available for us to continue with coal and oil. Sorry, billionaires. Maybe try investing in something else.

16. I believe that women should not be treated as a separate class of human. They should be paid the same as men who do the same work, should have the same rights as men and should be free from abuse. Why on earth shouldn’t they be? [Women who do the same jobs as men ARE paid the same. It’s just that, statistically, women gravitate toward jobs that pay less. Consider this: if women could be paid less, AND were equally qualified for a given job, then almost no men could get a job in that field. Any company would hire whoever they can get for less]

I think that about covers it. Bottom line is that I’m a liberal because I think we should take care of each other. That doesn’t mean you should work 80 hours a week so your lazy neighbor can get all your money. It just means I don’t believe there is any scenario in which preventable suffering is an acceptable outcome as long as money is saved.
